This building was never a hotel, believe it or not.
It was constructed around the turn of the century and originally functioned as a bank. In the 1940s it was purchased by new owners, who made the top floor their private residence and converted the bottom floor into a grocery store, Glidden Grocery and Market. In 1981, the building was used as a set in the TV movie “The Long Summer of George Adams“, starring James Garner and Joan Hackett. In the film, the bank-turned-grocery-store functions as a hotel in the town of Cushing, Oklahoma. The film was based on a book by Weldon Hill.

Now this little hotel stands abandoned in the tiny Texas town of Maydelle (estimated population 250).
Wow!! I’d never heard of this movie, and I’m only 15 minutes from Cushing, OK! LOVE this fabulous old building — wouldn’t it be wonderful as any number of things? Thank you so much for posting this, and now I’ll be looking for that movie!
You must not have read my very last sentence, Lori. 🙂 The Cushing Hotel is in Maydelle, TX. The name is completely made up.
So the building was moved from Cushing, Oklahoma to Maydelle, Texas?
That’s what I understand, yes.
I think they put Hotel on it for the movie, that’s why it say the hotel that was never a hotel.
This building was not moved over 350 miles from Cushing, OK to Maydelle. The movie was filmed in Nacogdoches County, TX. The town of Cushing, TX is in this county and is about 30 miles from Maydelle.
No the building was not moved. Movies are often based somewhere other than where they are actually filmed. This building has always been in Maydelle TX
Sweet! I would love to take a peek inside. I hope someone rescues it. Thanks for sharing
This reminds me of a store that I went to when I was young, it was called Prides store and I can remember walking inside, it still exists in Dalton, AR. I wonder how many memories someone has of Cushing Hotel. Thanks
Makes you wonder, doesn’t it.
No, no, I read that! I just meant that I’m surprised I hadn’t heard of a movie about Cushing, OK since I live near there. That is a fabulous old bldg — would love to see it in person.
Oh, OK, gotcha! 🙂
My spouse and I stumbled over here coming from a different web page and thought I may as well
check things out. I like what I see so i am just following you.
Look forward to looking over your web page for a second time.
Is this building for sale? I would love to restore this.
Not to my knowledge! I’m not sure it’s even standing. It’s been forever since I drove through Cushing.
Cushing is my husband’s family name. Wonder what the connection is. Who built/named it?
Please read some of the comments — it was used for a movie set.
Oh, do I hear where your coming from…..what I call my huge hippy built house has about 8000 running feet of 13/16′ long leaf tongue and grove from old houses in and around the Elgin Tx area. Just turned 82, still have a lot of lumber collected throughout my past. Might get some more done yet……..
Oh man! I’d love to see photos, Jeff! Would love to see your project.
