Friday Favorites - RUST - 1a

Is rust a color?  I think it is.  Therefore, I present to you my first ever “rust” Friday Favorites.

Enjoy!

Kim. Love your rustic vntage pressed tin. I found some panels, 7 identical, in mostly good condition. No rears, of rot.

But the color just doesn”t work, and there is light rust on the top edges of the detail.

Wonder if you might suggest a way to clean, stop the rust, and, using AnnieSloan chalk paint to paint my color, and to distress.

    Thinks Kim!

Jim, here’s what I would do: I would first gently/lightly scrape any crusty rust using a wire or nylon brush, then buy a rust inhibitor that will basically kill the progression of the rust. (Apply it and let it dry according to the package directions.) Then, use a paint specially formulated for metal. To achieve a distressed look, first paint the tins a darker color like black or dark grey. After the first coat has dried, apply a lighter paint. Once the second coat has dried, use a fine grit sandpaper and lightly sand in several areas to imitate age. Then, when you have the effect you want, clear coat the tins with a clear sealer.
